Holiday Bustle, and SHOWS!

Its crunch time kids, less than 20 days to Christmas, am I ready for this? Not in the slightest!

A recap of November! Sales have been steady and crazy at i like you- (yay!). We had our annual holiday ornament show, and I made yarn ball ornaments for your knitty friends, and yarn kitties. OMG the cutest cat faces ever. Each one is special in its own way, and the faces… I mean purrsonality. Seriously, one of the funnest gifts I have ever made. I got to send one out to Colorado and one to Michigan through my etsy! My mission for tomorrow, make all the yarn kitties…. all of them! Army of Yarn Kitties!!!

I have two shows this week. Art and Soul is Dec. 11th 4-9pm (6-9pm Adults only for opening party) I am planning on bringing my wheel for some demo time.
Dec. 12th 4-9pm Also bringing wheel, dependent on customer traffic on demo time.
Dec. 13th 12-5pm

I will have my gear there all three days but will only be able to attend the first two, B will be covering my booth on Saturday (12/13) since I had previously committed to another show at CoExhibitions from 10-6. If you are in town, please stop by one or both of them, I will have different items at both since I will be having 2 booths simultaneously, and the artists I get to sell with are really fabulous at both locations, I dont know which one I am more excited for! I am trying to keep it all together, I need sleep but I want to keep making all the fun things!

I still have no idea what I would like for Christmas, I keep asking B, hoping he will get me to think about something I would really really like, but I am kinda at a loss. I have been blessed this year with a whole new attitude, a new job that I love, a new creative side, I have no real needs. So this year’s Christmas will be just icing on the cake. 2015 is going to be even more amazing than 2014. AMAZINGER. yes, I said it.

The busy holiday season is coming!

Hi all!

I wanted to make a quick post and give an update on what has been happening for me. As revealed in a previous post, I left my job of 7+ years and ventured out to focus more on my artwork and craft while working at a super awesome gift shop. I figured I would have tons of time to work on all the art I wanted to, and do housework. Little did I know, I would be busier than I have ever been! These 3 months have flown by, which have been all very awesome, but man! Where did that time go?

I have my yarn at the textile center in minneapolis.

I have new jewelry and my knits at i like you in NE Mpls. Coming soon are knit and crochet gift sets!

A holiday ornament show is November 22 at i like you, and will be absolutely amazing. You should go if you are available. 🙂

November 30 and December 1 (Makers Monday) I will be home working on my tables and having a presale. If you would like to get your gifties before my next shows this is the time to do it. Contact me for times.

December 11-13 I have a show at Art and Soul in Richfield. I will have a large assortment of my handspun yarn, wearables, ornaments and small assortment of my jewelry.

December 13 I have a show at the CoExhibitions World Craft Fair in NE Minneapolis. Will have a large assortment of all I sell.

More details on the shows will be available soon. I just wanted to post what I have so far. I am so pumped!

– A few new items I should note, I am whipping up some adorable Swarovski necklace/ earring sets, a super deal at $50. Sterling Silver. Will be listed on Etsy this weekend! And of course I am up for special orders!

I also want to take a moment out to thank those who have supported me and my venture throughout the years, I could not have done all this without you, and I truly appreciate your continued support by reading my blog, liking my pictures, and buying my product. Even if your purchases are not with me this holiday season, please think about buying handmade. It means more than you will ever know.

A sale, an update on my yarn progress, and a feature on Hooping.org!

Excitement is brewing over at Kaleidoscope Kitty studios!

Fall is in the air and I am keeping my hands warm with lots of projects! As the weather cools, I thought it might be nice to have a little sale. 🙂 “FALLSALE” gets you 15% off my store good until October 4! Check it out!!!

I am currently spinning up a fantastically bright pink skein of yarn, that (I believe) will be plyed with a lovely oceany blue. I have to think on that one a bit more before I make my decision on it but they will go together so beautifully, it would be a shame not to spin them together. When B is working on music, I am spinning, when we go watch a couple episodes of LOST (finally powering thru the whole season after so many years) I am working on a new scarf. So far I have made 7 scarves that are adorable. I am weighing my options on taking on commissions, whether or not I will have time to do them, I always want to help everyone out, but stress myself in the end. I aim for a low/no stress holiday!

Sparkling Necklaces I just finished up some wedding jewelry that turned out simply gorgeous. I am so happy with the result. I think I will be doing some sets for the holidays and my upcoming shows, and necklace and earring sets are great!

I will be dropping off my yarn to the Minnesota Textile Center almost 2 weeks early for I Love Yarn Day (October 10)! So exciting. If you are in the area, please treat yo self. Beautiful things are at their shop, and they are from artists. Since I have moved on to the store I am working at now, I am much happier buying a coffee mug that is $25 from an artist than getting one at Target for $4. Its unique and beautiful. Watching customers fall in love with handmade stuff everyday makes my job so much better.

And last and certainly super awesome…. I was featured on Hooping.org. For the non hooping folk, I am sure this is no big thing, but I am super proud of it. Check it out here! Hooping.org

Thanks again for reading, I really appreciate you. I promise to keep updating with new and interesting goodies as they happen on a more regular basis.

A Sprained Ankle, A Wedding, A Party, and a Mini-Moon

Well! What a crazy few weeks I have had. First let me confirm the rumors. Yes I got married. Woo! Those last couple weeks were kinda hard to keep under wraps, and under control, but I did it. Some people were surprised, and lots were very happy for us.
We’ll start this journey on the Monday before the wedding. Had to go get sa couple last minute wedding things all taken care of, and then a quick swoop down to Afternoon Printing to pick up our Hoop Twin Cities swag. We got tanks and track jackets and they look amazing. Afternoon Printing did such a nice job and worked so patiently with me to get exactly what we wanted, I had to give them a shout out. Thanks guys! Tuesday arrives, I close at the store, and B swoops me up to get to hoops with a little time to spare. We get to Lake Calhoun, have such a great turnout of hoopers, and everyone starts going thru the box of goodies. Which means, perfect time for some open air hooping. Since we have had some crazy wicked rainy weather, I have been stuck to the confines of my basement, unable to get some wide open hoop time. I jump right into the new combo I have been working on, which involves arm fold/wraps and jumping. Its a pretty sweet move, and I have been always super scared about jumping ever since I fell down the Metrodome stairs in my youth. Pretty traumatic. Nailing that move, over and over, and craaaack. Hoop goes flying, and I fall to the ground. NO nonononono. People ran to check out my hoop, the noise was so loud, they thought I broke my hoop. I wished that was the case. Are you kidding me? 2 days before my wedding? On our way to the hospital we go.

Hours later, oh yes, I also should let you know, I had to work on Wednesday, we find out that, yes, indeed, it is a sprain. How am I supposed to fit my fat foot in my super cute shoes? Wait, no, that means I have to start my jumping journey all over again. I cant hoop? Oh the sadness.

Our Friday wedding turned out lovely. the weather man was very off on all his predictions all week, and hoped he was off on this one too, I dont think I would be able to deal with a sprained ankle and a soaking wedding dress.

We started the morning off going to the farmers market to pick up flowers. I didnt really have anything in mind, I didnt know what kind of flowers they would be carrying, so I was open to awesomeness. Luckily I had borrowed a wheelchair for our 10 minute outing, I dont think that crutching around would have been good for anyone, and everyone kept telling me, “Stay off your foot”. We found some beautiful flowers, spent $60, and I got to feel like Miss America holding them all. Pretty awesome if you ask me. Got home and started to decorate. 20140705-121850-44330403.jpg

During my hair appointment, it started to rain. Man. Any rain at home? Nope! Woo! In the clear! Now time to get home and have a wedding. 🙂

Our photographer was Bethany from Aqua Fox Photography. She is amazing and who took our engagement photos. I am realizing not many people got to see those since we kept everything so quiet. Im a quiet girl sometimes. Sorry, it happens. I’ll post some of those later, they truly are beautiful.

Awesome quick wedding, great weather, and PIZZA! All weddings should have pizza.

I said I was going to be that girl who got food on her wedding. Did not happen. I also was going to wear my beautiful shoes all night as well. Did not happen. We got a couple shots with them on. A 3 hour ordeal felt more like 20 mins, and I feel like I forgot some things, but oh well. It was never going to be perfect, just small, just fun.

20140705-122312-44592698.jpg
These are all items I made for the wedding, earrings, knotted pearl necklace, bracelet, and head piece.

20140705-122441-44681955.jpg This was my SSAP (Super Secret Alpaca Project) I helped shear this baby alpaca, I spun the fiber in to yarn, and then I crocheted it. You can say I like to do things myself. People joked that I made my own dress, but I purchased that. 🙂

A little mini moon was next on the list. I didn’t want to call it a honeymoon, since I want to go somewhere warm in the cold months. 🙂 We went up to the Duluth area for a couple days. Perfect weather, still dealing with my sprain, and oh my god, the mosquitos. I guess it was good I was confined to not walking on it unless necessary because those skeeters were terrible. I am still dealing with the bites. On the plus I got lots of art in. I spun up two skeins (which I probably shouldnt since my wheel is double treadle) and drew a bunch.

20140705-124232-45752218.jpg
Last but not least, is the scarf project I am working on. Its working up so nicely, soon I will have the decision of Mine, Gift, or Sell. This is currently being worked on in Malabrigo Rastita. I am also dreaming of how my yarn would look with it. Yummy.

20140705-124550-45950648.jpg
Came home to happy kitties and a flowering yard, and birds! Oh the birds! I might have to learn about birding more to list all the birds we have been seeing this year. Its amazing. I type this as I look over to see a Blue Jay getting some snacks. My phone got weird with its camera a couple months back, so I have been limited on my photo capabilities, but I got a new one, and Im sure I will be posting all the beauties soon. I am on the mend. Fighting my ankle all the way. I will heal, hopefully sooner than later. Im not enjoying missing out on everything.

Thanks for reading ! I know it was a long one!

New year, new possibilities!

Wow, January is sure flying by! I have been a bit more quiet as of late, I can’t keep up with it all. Work, friends, home projects. My work life is still continuing busy. I like being busy, if you arent busy, you get bored. I finalized a demo schedule for my staff to work on and I have 2 (yes 2!) demos in February. Inktense IS on that schedule, so get excited. I sure am! I think for March I will be doing some more on Acrylics again, getting back to my roots. Either way, I am pumped for teaching!

The home is ever changing, got new carpet in the office, where I am writing this note, and downstairs in the basement. I haven’t spent much time downstairs since the flooding in June, it was pretty sad and in disarray. Now, I have new carpet, and shelving. And decorating… oh the decorating! Next will be paint!

A little sample of my decorating talents. 🙂 IMG_1112

Like all new things they take time, so I am trying to be patient. Because patience makes awesome.

Oh yes, speaking of new!!! I bought my computer! I am now typing on Jazz, my new iMac. For those of you who do not know, Jazz is a type of apple… 🙂 I can be clever every now and then.

Having a real Saturday off and not having to do anything really confuses my body. I want to sleep all day and stay up til weird hours doing nothing like reading about celebrities. Yup, I can be that person. I was determined to get some etsy work done. I was pleasantly surprised that my new computer has a nice photo editing software, and was mildly easy to manipulate and size. Then comes the descriptions…  I so far have 7 posts completed. I will call that one a WIN.

Check out some of the pretties I posted today!

I am still plugging along on my bobble stitch scarf, its getting long!!! I am regretting not weaving in the ends as I change colors, for a couple reasons, one, it looks messy, people see it as I work on it and go, “ooh whats that?” and then see it and kinda step away in horror. 2) finishing the piece will be that much harder because when I am done, I am done. Taking the extra time to frame something or put a coat of varnish on (something I ALWAYS do by the way) I hate it, well, no I should revise that statement, I do not take enjoyment in doing it. It feels very chore-y and annoying. Maybe I can work on that.

Anyways, keeping on! Thanks for reading

New Year, New You, New Projects from Kaleidoscope Kitty

First, let me start this post off with a Happy New Year! May your past be behind you, your future be bright, and 2014 bring much splendor to your life!

I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday season. As much as I love the holidays, it wore me out a bit more than usual. I kept busy with my normal projects, but the combo of the weather (crappy) and retail, and holiday stressors got me a bit down. It happens, its over, I am done with it. Instead of worrying about those things, I am throwing myself into new projects.
1) I started a lovely tunisian stitch cowl done in Malabrigo Rasta. It is so thick, I can only do a couple rows at a time, or my hands start cramping up. Its real attention getter on the bus though, since its not a stitch normally seen, I catch people all the time hovering over and trying to take a peek. Its ok! You can ask. 🙂

20140101-100820.jpg

2) My neck gets cold at work… In enters the new neckwarmer (yarn by Freia, I love this stuff)

20140101-100956.jpg

3) The Bobble Stitch. I have always been fascinated by intricate stitches. Since my learning was off books and not by a family member, there is always a different gap in learning. I am envious of thosse who can freeform crochet at the drop of a hat, and often wonder why my mind wont take me there. One of my conclusions is that I dont know enough “weird” stitches. The bobble, popcorn, bullion, stuff like that. It also could be that my mind doesnt think on that level, but I am not giving up on learning yet. SO last year I learned tunisian. It is not the kind of stitch you can really throw into a freeform project (or so I think) and 2 days before new year I decided I could learn one more.
This scarf has a couple delicious handdyed yarns to it. One is Madelinetosh, another is Sonoma, and the third is Ella Rae. The Ella Ray is a tiny bit larger of a yarn and where it might bother me in other projects, I am enjoying the extra textures quite a bit right now.

20140101-103125.jpg

4) Super Secret Spinning Wheel Project. I have been holding onto this lovely Alpaca roving for many months, waiting for the right time to start playing with it. My holiday gifts are done and I have decided that January is time for me. I have 1lb 7oz of Cria fiber (cria means baby) to work on spinning. I started it the other night. Its so soft, its hard to describe spinning with it. Maybe like spinning little wispy clouds. Yes! wispy clouds. Anyway it is beautiful and I cant wait to continue sharing this journey of fiber.

20140101-103739.jpg On a side note, I have been officially spinning yarn for one year! It feels like longer, but this shift in my art feels so natural, and amazing.

December 22 had a lovely booth- I realized now I haven’t shared it. My booth is ever changing, sometimes dependent on the venue, sometimes on the product I am bringing. My show at BE Coterie had a bit of it all and I look forward to coming back and vending my wares again.

20140101-104332.jpg

Christmas brought me a very artsy holiday. I received the 72 count set of Inktense Blocks- Which will expand my demonstrating capabilities even more. I got one whole pound of roving for me to work on dying. It is superwash and has silk and silver in it. GORGEOUS. A gift card to my favorite yarn shop went very fast on Sunday, and I got the full set of the symfonie hooks that I like so much. Art holidays are the best aren’t they?

My New Years Eve was spent having delicious filet mignons and watching 200 Cigarettes. It is my New Years tradition, I have to watch it every year. Its my favorite. So if anyone wants a quick synopsis, they smoke a lot of cigarettes on NYE 1981, a whole lot of awesome people are in it, and they swear, more than I remember. The music is good. Its just a cute movie.

I don’t make resolutions. I make mini goals and demolish them. Every year I have to learn something new. Every year I want to be more successful with Kaleidoscope Kitty and my art. This year I made great strides in getting my brand more well known. I started my little blog, which I am enjoying very much, and is getting better and better with each bit of info I am learning about WordPress (prepare for big things, my friends) . I made my first international sale with my yarn. I shipped yarns from Utah to Maryland. Jewelry from California to Pennsylvania. Overall, I feel that is a good year. I dream of a day I can see people walking down the street wearing my designs, or a show where I can sell out an entire basket of OOAK yarns. Workshops that people clamor for (workshops are coming btw). I know I am meant for art and it is meant for me, I am still working on getting there.

Look out 2014- this is going to be a big one! <3

I’d love to hear some of your thoughts on resolutions, do you make them, how often they are kept. What crazy projects you are up to fresh into the new year. <3

Winter Weather Blues- Now with a Festive Recipe!

Well, winter is here. Hopefully not to stay long. Today as I type this we are dealing with a warm, balmy -7º. And I live here why? I look out my window and feel a little sinking in my heart, the squirrels won’t even come out today. On the plus side it is sunny out, and I love the sun. A day off doesn’t hurt either. The kitties are enjoying a day with me, lots of snuggles, it can be pretty hard to type with 3 laying on your legs. They are also not enjoying the cold, I am often seeing them piled up by the heat registers. One of the more popular hangouts is by the water dish, so it almost looks like they are hanging out by the water cooler. Girl has taken over post as I type this, and as uncomfortable as I actually am, it becomes harder and harder to move her, especially when she looks like this.

photo (12)

I am continuing on my holiday gift making journey. I just finished a really fun netted infinity cowl last night. Its HUGE! I never thought I would be able to finish it. I really need to take some last minute pictures and get them up in my shop. I don’t want anyone to miss out on the pretty things for holiday and for themselves. I can’t wait to gift these to their owners. Making things for people that makes them happy makes me happy! THIS is why I do art.

My worklife is proving to be a challenge to my business this year. Since we have such a short time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, all my weekends are at the store. And asking for it off seems silly and rude. I usually can get a show in or two during this season, and this year, none have worked out. That is how I was able to afford Opal last year. This year I have a few new goals, one being a new computer, I love Frank (he’s my frankenstein, I built him and he’s kinda big) but for some reason he’s struggling to play videos, he likes to freeze up when I work on etsy, or my blog (one of the reasons I have been so quiet… along with work), he’s just not doing what he needs to do for me. So I have a computer on top of my must buy list. Computers are not cheap. Ugh. Not cheap at all. We have a bunch of other “fun” home improvements on our list as well, new carpet is one of them and will be here in a couple weeks. Lots to get done before the summer. It will all be beautiful in the end. 🙂

B. and I saw Catching Fire on Wednesday. Our Hoop group canceled for the night on account of terrible weather, and we had some time to kill because traffic was so bad. I won’t go into my thoughts on the movie aside from that I liked it a lot, but my big thing was OMG those knits! I love the fact I crochet, I really do. I hate the fact that every yarn shop has a bajillion knit projects out on display and no crochet. If I ever learn how to properly knit (as in knit better than what I do now) I will learn specifically for her outfits. Goal for next year! Woo!

A bit of a reminder post about my holiday specials at my shop!

On my etsy shop– enter “GIFTGIVING” at checkout to receive 20% off!

Note this discount does not apply to my handspun yarn. The time that it takes for me to spin, ply, set, and tag is more a labor of love than a major money maker. (I spend at least 4 hours with each skein, many on the upwards of 6-8 hours. If we do the math, how much I sell my yarn for, and minus the roving cost, my wage can sometimes be as low as $2- $3/ hour)
Due to those circumstances, I am doing a different offer for all handspun yarn purchases! At checkout, in notes to buyer- enter “holidaylove” and I will send you a special thank you- a pair of Sterling Silver and stone earrings (normally $15-20) for free. My way of thanking you for buying my handspun and your support.

Please let me know if you need help with etsy- I am happy to help!

Last but not least, I have a new recipe- I have seen versions around but this way I have it in one place. My favorites.

—————————————————————————————————————Oreo Rice Krispie Treats

INGREDIENTS!
3 Tbsp.  butter
1 pkg.  (10 oz.) JET-PUFFED Marshmallows (I tend to go a bit more on the  marshmellowy side)
5 cups  Rice Krispie cereal (I love the generic cereal for these)
16 OREO Cookies, coarsely chopped, divided (I put mine in a ziploc and smashed away)
3- 1 oz. squares of Bakers Semi Sweet Chocolate (The next time I do this I might use one less Chocolate square, its really pretty that way.Your own mini Pollack painting!)
Confetti Sprinkles for Sundaes

MICROWAVE butter in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 45 sec. or until melted. Add marshmallows; toss to coat. Microwave 1-1/2 min. or until marshmallows are completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring after 45 sec.

ADD cereal and 1 cup chopped cookies; mix well.

PRESS onto bottom of 13×9-inch pan sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle with remaining chopped cookies; press lightly into cereal mixture to secure. Cool completely before cutting into squares.MICROWAVE Chocolate squares for 30 seconds until melted, stirring between each 30 second session.

Drizzle with spoon over Krispie Treats.

SPRINKLE those sprinkles!

ALLOW chocolate to set up by cooling

Yes kids this is one of my silicone pans. There are certain things that I only want to use silicone for, one of which is Rice Krispie treats!!! (another one is for my caramels. I cant believe I used anything else ever, but that is another blog post)

ENJOY!

An update and a new project.

Ah, I am finally feeling better, I hate being down for the count. And although my week wasn’t going to be super exciting, I did feel like I was missing out on some even in the world that my presence should have been at. SO if I missed yours. I am sorry.

I am realizing with every passing day I need a new computer. For some reason PCs don’t like me. Do I know why? No. They crash, they freeze, they slur their words when I watch movies. I had an android phone, I zapped it with my energy and had to replace it 4 or 5 times before I went to an iphone. I hate to say it, but Operation Buy Christine a New Computer has commenced for this holiday season, and I am looking at a fruity variety. All holiday dollars made will be going twards a new computer for me to work on. So let’s do this! I got awesome things to sell and people got Christmas gifts to get. (A little motivation for myself, my computer situation is somewhat disappointing and depressing.)

On the plus side, I already finished one holiday gift. Its absolutely lovely. Now I have to wait to give it. And not post photos. How am I to do this successfully? I am known in the past to be too excited for some holiday gifts that I give them at Thanksgiving. I guess I can do that, but its still not the same. I always feel weird, like, “um, so I don’t have anything for you because, well you remember I gave you that thing a month ago?” Yea… No matter what I always like I came empty-handed. I started on another gift. Some of my handspun and I am struggling. 4 times I have frogged this yarn. Its lovely and I have a great idea for it, its just not coming out right. So I am going to put it aside and keep working on other things. A few more things to sell first. I finished another cowl- but I am debating on whether I would like a new cowl or if I should sell it. I am going to do a couple more, and really finish the pattern so I can post it up here! In the mean time, here is a couple shots of some recently finished pieces that I love.

photo 2

The color looks a little off here, but it has a lovely assortment of raspberry, a smidge of green, some purple and blue. Its from Madelinetosh A.S.A.P. The color used here is Alizarin. Its very soft and chunky- my ballwinder couldn’t wind this stuff because it was so soft. The lower picture is featured in Fog. photo 1 I tried winding that one 5 times before I gave up and did it the old fashioned way- using B.’s hands and me winding it. One time the ball flew off the winder and all the way across my work table and onto the floor! I was a bit skeptical on whether or not I was going to like working with it because it was so soft. But I was very pleased. It makes a nice substitute for Rasta in a pinch (not as thick thought)

2 skeins was all it took!

I know the pattern by heart but I am going to do it at least one more time before I post the full pattern. A test in something thinner should be a good challenge. I got some Prism yarn its a hand-dyed merino from Amazing Threads that has a nice softness, but not as thick so we’ll see how this challenge goes. I wasn’t super happy when I balled it, it likes to felt on itself, so frogging might not be much of a possibility if this is a failed experiment. Let’s hope for the best!

I posted a few new items on etsy the other night. One of them was modeled by B. since I wasn’t feeling super photogenic that day. Its a pretty feminine infinity scarf but he pulls it off quite well. photo 4 (3) photo 5

Other than that its same ol same. I picked up S by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst, but dont know when I will really have any time to go through all the book and its accessories. I have many goals. The third Unwind book is also in queue on my kindle which I am itching to read. So many things to do and not enough time!

Tomorrow B. and I will be making potatoes. A favorite of mine. We will be taking lots of pictures so we can post them on my site. My sweet chili chicken recipe has been a very popular post, and I have seen some great numbers in visitors. So I want to share another one of my faves. (It reheats suuuper well!!!)

The night owl.

Just a mini post about this hat I am working on. The roving came from SpunRightRound on etsy- its AMAZING. a lovely Polworth and Tussah Silk mix. I am working on a sassy hat for Monday’s trunk show. But- I have a confession to make. If this hat does not sell on Monday, B is gonna have a hard time getting me to post it on Etsy. It looks like a Carebear party. And I sure LOVE the Carebears- so its kinda screaming MINE!!! We’ll see if it makes it to etsy!

regardless on how tired I may be right now- I’ll have about 4 hours of sleep tonight, I will say I am making some pretty sweet stuff right now, so I am very proud of that. Just a few more days of making stuff like crazy. Counting wraps, Finishing Skeins. It will all be worth it. Just in time for the holidays.  photo 1 (5) photo 2 (5)
